I am always trying to improve and grow as I enjoy my painting journey. Rather than attend classes or trying to create new paintings, I've decided to focus on finishing and/or revisiting some recent paintings to see if I can improve them. A few issues have arisen, however.
1. When painting a model from life, no matter how good the model is, they ARE alive and they move. Therefore if I have been lucky enough to be able to take a photo, it is sometimes not the exact same pose as the painting captured. That happened when I went in to revisit my Corinna in Pink painting. I had decided that some of my lights were too light... but when I was looking at the photo, I realized that her eyes were closed and one foot was in a different position. Oh well, I repainted it with closed eyes and left the foot as it was.
2. I revisited one of my still lifes and reworked some of the shadows to better anchor the items.
3. I worked on the arms and hands and background on another portrait study that I hadn't had time to finish in class.
Revisiting and Reworking
My dilemma is that I have difficulty deciding whether the reworked pieces are better than their previous iterations. I guess I'll just have to sit and stew over them until they seem "right" to me. Sometimes I'm my worst critic and sometimes I have a fairly good eye. Right now, I'm thinking I need to work on the arm of my "Holly" painting a bit more.
